So far in 2022, average D&amp;D charges by major ports have declined to an average of <span class=\"xn-money\">$664<\/span> per container by 26%, although fees remain far higher than pre-pandemic at around 12%.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. came out worse regarding D&amp;D costs in regional comparisons in Container xChange&#8217;s Demurrage &amp; Detention Benchmark 2022 report. By region, D&amp;D charges in May in the US were the highest at <span class=\"xn-money\">$2,692<\/span> per container. This compared to <span class=\"xn-money\">$549<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">Europe<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-money\">$482<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">India<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-money\">$453<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">China<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$366<\/span> in the &#8216;Rest of <span class=\"xn-location\">Asia<\/span>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Throughout this pandemic, as shipping costs have soared and inflation has become a threat to the global economy, it has become critical for shippers to develop visibility into container operations to manage costs like Demurrage and Detention. <span class=\"xn-location\">China<\/span> leads the world in maritime exports and even though it has some of the busiest ports in the world, they&#8217;ve ensured they are the most efficient \u2013 even during lockdowns.&#8221; said <b><span class=\"xn-person\">Christian Roeloffs<\/span>, co-founder of Container xChange.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Qingdao<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Ningbo<\/span> \u2013 which are 3 of only 8 ports that increased in Demurrage and detention (D&amp;D) charges in 2022, still exhibit a much lower D&amp;D charge in general, ranking #43, #52 and #42 on the global list respectively. <\/b>On average, the D&amp;D charges at these 8 Chinese ports rose from <span class=\"xn-money\">$390<\/span> in 2020 to <span class=\"xn-money\">$700<\/span> in 2021 \u2013 a staggering rise of 79.4%. The average D&amp;D charges for these 8 ports in <span class=\"xn-location\">China<\/span> fell to <span class=\"xn-money\">$614<\/span>, declining by 12.2%.<\/p>\n<p>For Hong Kong SAR, where the container congestion was the worst, there was a 105% hike in its D&amp;D charges from <span class=\"xn-money\">$813<\/span>. Hong Kong SAR recorded a fall of 8.9% in its D&amp;D charges, coming down to <span class=\"xn-money\">$1515<\/span>.
