Attendees included descendants of survivors, international friends, overseas Chinese, students, and volunteers from the Zijin Grass Volunteer Service. Holding candles, they listened to the trumpet solo&nbsp;<i>Nanjing Memory<\/i>, paying tribute to the victims of the massacre.<\/p>\n<p>Mark, a Zijin Grass International Volunteer, read excerpts in English from the wartime diary of Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Robert Wilson<\/span>, the only American surgeon who remained in <span class=\"xn-location\">Nanjing<\/span> during the massacre. His great-granddaughter, <span class=\"xn-person\">Ashleigh Jacobson<\/span>, attended the assembly and remarked, &#8220;Lighting these candles, I feel not only the weight of history but also a warmth that connects my family to the people of <span class=\"xn-location\">Nanjing<\/span> across generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Zijin Grass Children&#8217;s Choir performed&nbsp;<i>Peace Brings Zijin Grass to Bloom<\/i>, while students from Jinling High School Affiliated Experimental Primary School sang&nbsp;<i>Empathy<\/i>, a song composed by <span class=\"xn-person\">Megan Brady<\/span>, the great-granddaughter of American doctor <span class=\"xn-person\">Richard Brady<\/span>. The children&#8217;s heartfelt performances expressed both sorrow and hope through music.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from volunteer organizations, universities, hospitals, and historians placed glowing petals around the statue, symbolizing a collective commitment to fostering the flower of peace.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the main event, students from seven universities, including <span class=\"xn-location\">Nanjing<\/span> University and Nanjing Normal University, held candlelight vigils on their campuses, joining the commemoration via live video connections to mourn the victims and pray for peace.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Zhou Feng<\/span>, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee, highlighted the significance of the ceremony: &#8220;Peace is warm, like tonight&#8217;s candlelight, illuminating the future as it guards the long night of history. We must transform the pain of the Nanjing Massacre into a driving force for peace and development, becoming practitioners, storytellers, and ambassadors of peace.
