{"id":43848,"date":"2026-03-16T01:43:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T01:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prnasia.com\/story\/archive\/4910468_CN10468_0"},"modified":"2026-03-16T01:43:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T01:43:00","slug":"trial-to-test-mild-hyperbaric-oxygen-therapy-during-active-treatment-for-aggressive-brain-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transmediavictoria.net.au\/?p=43848","title":{"rendered":"Trial to test mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy during active treatment for aggressive brain cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<br \/>\n<table name=\"logo_release\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnasia.com\/media2\/2809261\/Southern_Cross_University_Australia_Logo.jpg?p=medium600\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" title=\"logo\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"118\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"legendSpanClass\">LISMORE, <span class=\"xn-location\">Australia<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"legendSpanClass\"><span class=\"xn-chron\">March 16, 2026<\/span><\/span> \/PRNewswire\/ &#8212; Australian researchers from Southern Cross University (SCU) and the Melbourne Integrative Oncology Group (MIOG) will launch a clinical study investigating whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can safely support patients undergoing treatment for high-grade glioma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"PRN_ImbeddedAssetReference\" id=\"DivAssetPlaceHolder1\">\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Backed by a <span class=\"xn-money\">$1 million<\/span> philanthropic gift from an anonymous donor, the collaborative research will examine whether delivering oxygen in a pressurised environment during active cancer treatment can improve treatment effectiveness, patient wellbeing, treatment tolerance and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The trial is the first of its kind in <span class=\"xn-location\">Australia<\/span> and is also believed to be the first globally to investigate mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (1.35 ATA, which is a substantially lower pressure than conventional hospital hyperbaric treatment) combined with molecular hydrogen in an oncology setting.<\/p>\n<p>Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing concentrated oxygen inside a pressurised chamber, allowing oxygen to dissolve more readily into the bloodstream and reach tissues that are typically oxygen-deprived.<\/p>\n<p>Solid tumours, including aggressive brain cancers, are often hypoxic (low oxygen). This low-oxygen environment can make cancer cells more resistant to radiotherapy, impair normal tissue healing, and contribute to more aggressive tumour behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Because radiotherapy partly relies on oxygen-dependent mechanisms to damage cancer cells, researchers have long hypothesised that improving tissue oxygenation could enhance treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects.<\/p>\n<p>HBOT is already used in Australian hospitals to treat radiation injuries such as osteoradionecrosis (radiation-damaged bone) and soft-tissue radionecrosis \u2013 the death of healthy tissue caused by high-dose radiation therapy.
