This project will feature 66 units of Sungrow’s ST5015-UX battery energy storage system (BESS), part of the PowerTitan 2.0 series, alongside 33 units of SC6900UD-MV Power Conversion System (PCS) inverters and Sungrow’s smart controller EMS3000. Designed for utility-scale applications, the PowerTitan 2.0 system offers several key advantages:

    • High energy density: Optimises energy storage capacity.
    • Liquid-cooled technology: Helps maintain stable operating temperatures and support system reliability.
    • Advanced battery management: Supports battery safety, performance monitoring and long-term operational reliability.
    • High-performance power conversion: Paired with the SC6900UD-MV PCS inverters, it supports efficient power conversion and responsive grid support for utility-scale applications.

With commercial operations targeted for 2028, the Hazelwood BESS 2 project will add significant battery storage capacity to Victoria’s energy infrastructure, reinforcing Hazelwood’s role in providing flexible energy resources for Victoria and the National Electricity Market (NEM). By storing and delivering electricity when needed, the system will help balance supply and demand as Australia’s energy landscape continues to evolve.

Grid-forming technology will further enhance the project’s capabilities, helping strengthen network performance as renewable generation increases. Key benefits include:

    • Grid stability: Supports voltage and frequency stability to help maintain reliable network operation.
    • Fast response: Enables rapid responses to changing grid conditions to support power system reliability.
    • Renewable integration: Helps accommodate higher levels of variable renewable generation.
    • Grid resilience: Provides advanced grid support capabilities to strengthen the network under changing operating conditions.

The combination of energy storage and advanced grid-forming capabilities will contribute to a more resilient and reliable power system.

“The Hazelwood BESS 2 represents an important step in advancing grid-forming energy storage in Australia. Through our collaboration with ENGIE, we aim to bring advanced energy storage technology to support grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy. We look forward to contributing our expertise and supporting the continued development of a more resilient energy system in Victoria,” said Thomas Hou, Managing Director at Sungrow Australia.

The commencement of Hazelwood BESS 2 reflects the continued development of large-scale battery storage in Australia and the role of Sungrow’s technology in delivering infrastructure to support the evolving energy system.
